Developing an Ecologically Integrated 3D Visualization Tool for Participatory River Restoration

River restoration is a complex multi-stakeholder process, as rivers flow through multiple land parcels managed by different owners and utilized by diverse residential groups with sometimes conflicting interests. Effective stakeholder engagement is essential for raising awareness of existing conflicts while fostering collaborative solutions. Yet, stakeholders often struggle to make meaningful contributions due to limited ecological knowledge and planning experience, making it challenging to evaluate alternatives and anticipate outcomes.

We are developing an ecologically-integrated 3D visualisation tool leveraging video game engine technologies to support stakeholders in co-designing river restoration scenarios. By integrating environmental data, ecological models, planning regulations, and interactive 3D visualisations, the tool automates the generation of landscape elements, including daylighted rivers and riparian vegetation communities. It enables users to explore and combine land-use and restoration alternatives dynamically.
